Alberta Lipedema Education Week
Dr Jozef Stutz, Vascular Surgeon and Lipedema Specialist
will be in ALberta the Week of July 3-7,2017

Dr. Stutz is a vascular surgeon who has been successfully treating lipedema with liposuction for twenty years.  He pioneered the use of water-jet assisted liposuction (WAL), a method which had been previously used for surgery on soft tissues such as the brain and liver. Using WAL, Dr. Stutz is able to operate even on late-stage lipo-lymphedema patients.
He is a frequent speaker at medical conferences on lipedema, and regularly collaborates with colleagues to demonstrate his techniques. His wife Jutta assists him in his practice in Bavaria.

Lipedema 101 - Course Outline
Most healthcare professionals agree that obesity is one of the most common conditions encountered during their careers.  But for as many as 11% of women, it is not that simple: They actually have a disorder called lipedema, which does not respond to diet and exercise.  Lipedema is a poorly understood condition that is considered a “Rare Adipose Disorder,” but in reality it is not so much rare as under diagnosed.   It often presents as excess deposits of painful fat below the waist that appear out of proportion to the rest of the body; left untreated, it can progress to lipo-lymphedema, as well as cause gait disturbances, loss of mobility, and disablement.

This program will educate our inter-professional audience on how to identify lipedema, and on the treatment options for this physically and emotionally painful disorder.

For many years, physicians, physical therapists, and other health care professionals in Europe have treated lipedema with a combination of Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD), compression, and other conservative treatments.  In addition, surgery with specific, lymphatic-sparing techniques has successfully decreased pain, increased mobility, and improved the quality of life of patients with this condition.

We are fortunate to have Dr. Josef Stutz, an internationally known expert on lipedema, to discuss this interesting topic.
Polly Armour, who has lipedema, will also share her experiences as a patient who struggled for years with a condition that she was told “didn’t exist.” Additionally, Ian Soles (lymphatic therapist, co-lead of ALNET and President of the Salutaris Centre) is joining us as an expert speaker on the conservative treatment of lipedema.
